Just opened Markup and everything looks totally different? Start here:

If you’ve just opened Markup R-XP to find the new version waiting for you, particularly if you weren’t expecting the update, please don’t panic. Your project hasn’t suddenly become a different project and, in most cases, your stitches and progress are still exactly where you left them.

The biggest change is simply how Markup is now organised.

In the old version, you loaded your project through the AutoLoader once and then opened it to stitch on the Markup tab. Almost everything happened on that one screen. You could stitch, edit symbols, change colours, adjust grids, look at previews and make changes to the chart. That was convenient, but it also meant it was very easy to change something without realising it. A symbol, colour or grid could be altered accidentally, leaving the project looking wrong and causing a lot of confusion about what had happened and how to fix it.

In the new version, we’ve taken those same jobs and split them into a series of smaller steps. We call those steps together the Project Wizard.

Think of it as one continuous path through your project. You can move forwards and backwards through it whenever you need to. The earlier steps are where you check or edit your chart, grids, symbols and colours. The final Markup step is where you actually stitch.

That’s really the main concept to understand.

So if you open an existing project and suddenly find yourself looking at chart pages, grids or setup screens, you haven’t been sent back to the beginning and you don’t need to start your project again. Markup may simply be asking you to check part of the existing setup. Work through the steps using Next, make sure everything looks correct, and you’ll arrive back at the Markup step with your project ready for stitching.

Sometimes an older project may need a page or grid checked because the new version has detected something in its original setup that wasn’t quite complete. Again, that does not mean your project has been deleted. It is still the same project, and you can now move backwards and forwards through its setup whenever you need to.

This help guide shows how the whole Project Wizard fits together and lets you drill down into each step if you need more detail:

There is also help built directly into the app. Look for the ? icon in the top right of the different steps, check the Tutorials tab on the Home screen, and we also have Judy Hudgins’ excellent PDF guide which you can find here:

We completely understand that this can be a jolt when you’ve used the old version for years and suddenly everything looks different. If you weren’t following the rollout here on Facebook, it may have arrived completely unexpectedly. But underneath the new interface, much of what you already know about Markup is still there. It’s simply been reorganised so that setting up your chart and actually stitching it are kept separate.

Give yourself a little time to get familiar with that new flow. Once the Project Wizard makes sense, a lot of the rest will fall into place very quickly.
